Under The Oak Tree | Chapter 10: The Last Night Before Graduation
Date: May 22nd, 2002
Place: Corner High School, Warrior, Alabama
As Kaitlyn and Eric walked out of the high school gym, the echo of their footsteps mingling with the fading voices of their classmates, a teacher called out to them, a gentle reminder in her voice.
“Kaitlyn, Eric, remember, tomorrow you can’t be here any later than 6:00 p.m. sharp for the ceremony,” she said, adjusting the stack of papers she was carrying.
Kaitlyn nodded, her smile bright under the afternoon sun. “We won’t forget, Mrs. Thompson. Thank you!”
Eric, his arm around Kaitlyn’s shoulders, grinned. “Yeah, wouldn’t miss it for the world.”
As they made their way across the school’s parking lot, the significance of the moment wasn’t lost on them. Tomorrow marked not just their graduation but the culmination of a journey filled with challenges, achievements, and memories that would last a lifetime.
A Night to Remember
“You know,” Eric started as they reached his car, “I can’t believe it’s all ending. Feels like just yesterday I was in seventh grade, trying to figure out where my classes were. And like just nine months ago you showed up and basically ignored me until Josh gave me your number.”
Kaitlyn leaned against the car, looking up at him. “I know, right? But you also didn’t talk to me either, I had to tell like twenty people I thought you were cute before someone ever delivered the message.”
Eric chuckled. “Speaking of me getting the girl of my dreams, how about we have our final high school date tonight? We can go to that little diner on the hill past the golf course. You know, the fancy place in town.”
Kaitlyn rolled her eyes at the suggestion but smiled. “That sounds perfect. A quiet dinner, just the two of us, reflecting on the past and dreaming of the future.”
As the car rolled towards the diner, the sun began its slow descent, casting long shadows across the golf course. They drove in comfortable silence, each lost in their thoughts about the journey ahead.
The Diner on the Hill
The diner was exactly as promised—completely empty.
“Thank you for this, Eric. I am really happy to be with you,” Kaitlyn said as they took their seats by the window.
Their dinner was a mix of laughter, shared memories, and hopeful plans for the future. As they talked about college, career aspirations, and dreams of travel, the weight of the impending graduation ceremony felt lighter, the future less daunting.
Leaving the diner, they paused at the top of the hill. Tomorrow, they would cross the stage as graduates, but tonight, they were just two high school sweethearts, standing on the threshold of the rest of their lives.
“Ready for tomorrow?” Kaitlyn asked, her voice soft in the quiet of the evening.
Eric squeezed her hand, his smile resolute. “With you by my side? Always.”
One Last Stop
As they drove away from the diner, the comforting glow of its lights receding into the distance, the conversation shifted toward their plans for the immediate future—tomorrow, to be precise.
“So, what’s the plan for after graduation tomorrow night?” Eric asked, his tone casual but underlying excitement palpable.
Kaitlyn brightened at the question. “Well, I was thinking we could all meet up at Bell Bottoms downtown. Celebrate properly, you know?”
“Sounds like a plan,” Eric agreed. “And tomorrow, during the day? Any thoughts?”
Kaitlyn hesitated before answering. “Actually, I have something to do right before graduation. I need to swing by Nicole’s place.”
Eric, a little surprised, glanced over at her. “Nicole’s? Could you maybe wait to see her at the ceremony?”
Kaitlyn shook her head. “No, I can’t. It’s her birthday tomorrow, and with Josh graduating too, I want it to be special for her. Everyone deserves to have a happy birthday, especially with everything that’s going on. I just feel bad, you know? It is my day, your day, Josh’s day, but since it is her birthday, everyone will probably forget about her.”
Understanding the sentiment, Eric nodded. “Alright, I get it. Making her day special is important. So, how about we meet in the parking lot right before we’re supposed to line up for graduation?”
“That works,” Kaitlyn said, a smile returning to her face. “I’ll be quick, I promise. And then we can head in together.”
“Deal,” Eric replied, content in the moment.
Their conversation flowed seamlessly from there, a mix of anticipation for the future and a deep appreciation for the moments they were living now. As they made their way back, the excitement for tomorrow’s celebrations—a milestone in their lives and a stepping stone into the future—was a bright beacon guiding them home.
