Under the Oak Tree – Chapter 5: A Storm and a Vanishing
Date: April 26th, 2008
Location: Lucas’s Backyard, Warrior, Alabama
In the expansive backyard, under the vibrant hues of the setting sun, our trio—Josh, Eric, and Lucas—gathered around a sizzling grill. The aroma of steaks filled the air, mingling with the casual chatter of about fifteen other guests who, though present, remained on the periphery of our story. Each friend held a beer in hand, except for Eric, a detail Josh couldn’t help but comment on.
A Quiet Evening Turns to Mystery
“Man, not grabbing a cold one today?” Josh asked, nudging Eric lightly with his elbow.
Eric shook his head, a small smile playing on his lips. “Nah, I think I’ll pass. You know…” As Lucas interrupted, “After Kaitlyn, it got ruined for him.”
The conversation ebbed as Lucas, seizing a moment of spontaneity, set up a golf tee and took a swing with his driver, the ball soaring towards the venerable oak tree that stood a testament to countless memories. “No one’s ever made it past the oak tree,” he boasted, his challenge hanging in the air like the ball’s fleeting arc.
Eric, who recently recovered from his bout of hay fever, stepped up with determination. “Well, let’s change that today,” he declared, his stance firm against the sudden gust of wind.
With a powerful swing, Eric sent the ball flying, its trajectory promising. As it neared the tree, the unimaginable happened—the ball vanished, leaving the three friends in stunned silence. “It’s got to be down there somewhere,” Josh muttered, though his voice carried a note of disbelief.
A Brewing Storm & A Deeper Conversation
The sky, now darkened with the threat of a storm, prompted a division of tasks. Josh stayed behind to tend to the grill and the gathering crowd, while Eric and Lucas ventured towards the tree in search of the elusive golf ball.
Rain began to fall, heavy droplets that drummed against the leaves of the oak, forcing the two friends to seek refuge beneath its expansive branches, much like they had in their youth. Looking back towards the house, they noticed the partygoers had moved indoors, a silent signal that the steaks were off the grill and Josh was now playing host.
Under the oak tree, Eric and Lucas found a brief respite from the brewing storm overhead, the first few raindrops beginning to patter softly around them. The air was thick with the scent of rain and earth, a natural cocoon that seemed to pull their thoughts deeper, more introspective.
“Man, everything’s going to change after June, isn’t it?” Lucas broke the silence, his voice laced with a mix of resignation and concern. “You moving away with Caitlyn, getting married… It’s all big stuff.”
Eric leaned back against the tree, his gaze lost to the canopy above, where leaves whispered secrets to the wind. “Yeah, it’s a lot. I’ve been so caught up in planning the wedding that I haven’t really stopped to think about… after.”
The Lightning Strike & Vanishing Act
A heavy silence fell between them, filled only by the intensifying rain and the distant rumble of thunder—a physical manifestation of the tension in their hearts.
Eric was about to speak when a flash of lightning cut across the sky, illuminating the uncertainty in both their faces. Lucas’s concern quickly shifted to alarm as he noticed the static charge around them. “Eric, your hair—” he started, pointing at Eric’s arm where every hair stood on end, a clear sign of the imminent danger.
“Maybe we should—” Eric’s words were cut off by Lucas’s urgent shout, “Get down!”
But it was too late. The world erupted in light and sound, a blinding flash followed by a deafening crack that seemed to split the very air they breathed. For a moment, everything was chaos, a tumult of light and noise that overwhelmed the senses.
As the echoes of the thunder faded, the two friends found themselves disoriented, blinking against the afterimages that danced before their eyes. The rain had intensified, now pouring down in sheets, a stark reminder of the storm’s power.
Lucas, the first to recover, looked over at Eric, relief flooding him as he found his friend unharmed. “That was too close, man. We need to get inside.”
Eric, still shaken, could only nod in agreement. But the encounter with the raw forces of nature had shifted something within them. As their vision began to clear, a mysterious purple glow caught their attention, shrinking in the distance. It was the same spectral light Lucas had seen before.
Eric Disappears
Drawn to it, Eric approached the fading illumination, where a glowing stone lay at its heart. With a mix of curiosity and trepidation, he reached out, but before his fingers could graze it, Eric vanished into thin air, leaving Lucas alone, his shock mirroring the crackling energy that had just disrupted the night.
In the aftermath, the tree stood unscathed, a silent witness to another profound moment in the lives of those who sought its shelter, leaving Lucas to grapple with the reality of his friend’s sudden disappearance and the mysterious forces at play beneath the branches of their childhood refuge.
