Under the Oak Tree – Chapter 6: A Perfect Memory

Date: May 4, 2002

Location: An open field in Birmingham, Alabama, between the railroad tracks and 1st Avenue South

The air was alive with the hum of excitement and music as Eric and Kaitlyn navigated through the bustling crowd of The Crawfish Boil in Birmingham, Alabama. Their hands intertwined, they moved in unison, a pair of hearts beating amidst a sea of revelry. The vacant lot near the railroad tracks, transformed into a vibrant mosaic of sounds, smells, and sights, stretched out before them, its expanse buzzing with the energy of the city’s beloved festival.

A Night of Music & Memories

“I had no idea Birmingham had something like this,” Kaitlyn said, her eyes wide with wonder as she took in the scene. “Back home, the most exciting thing we have is the annual county fair.”

Eric smiled, a hint of pride in his voice. “Yeah, it’s one of the highlights of the year here. Wait until Remy Zero comes on; it’s going to be unforgettable.”

As the current band wrapped up their set, the anticipation in the air thickened, a palpable excitement that surged through the crowd. The announcement that Remy Zero was up next sent a ripple of cheers across the field.

Talking About the Future

Seizing the moment of calm before the band took the stage, Eric and Kaitlyn found a spot on the grass, the buzz of the crowd and the dismantling of the previous band’s equipment serving as a backdrop to their conversation.

“So, what’s your plan after high school?” Kaitlyn asked, her gaze meeting Eric’s, a gentle curiosity in her eyes.

Eric took a deep breath, the future suddenly a tangible thing between them. “I’m staying local, going to UAB. It just makes sense for me, being close to family and all.”

Kaitlyn nodded, her expression thoughtful. “I got accepted to MIT, but I’m probably going to Vanderbilt. It’s closer to home, and being near my family is important to me.”

The revelation hung in the air, a testament to her brilliance and ambition. Eric felt a twinge of intimidation, the gap in their academic paths suddenly looming large in his mind.

Eric’s Inner Thoughts

Remy Zero took the stage, their opening chords cutting through Eric’s spiraling thoughts. As the music enveloped them, a shared excitement bubbled up, momentarily bridging the gap his insecurities had carved.

“She got into MIT. And here I am, opting for the closest college to my house. That’s practical, isn’t it? Staying close to home, close to what you know. But it’s MIT. That’s… it’s leagues beyond practical. It’s exceptional. How do I even compare to that?”

When “Perfect Memory” began, its melodic lines weaving through the air, Kaitlyn turned to him, her question soft but piercing. “Do I make you nervous?”

The First Kiss

The question, simple yet profound, found Eric at a loss for words. His heart raced, a tumult of emotions rendering him speechless. The world seemed to stand still, the music a distant echo against the rapid beating of his heart.

In that moment, suspended between doubt and desire, Eric found his answer not in words, but in action. Leaning in, he bridged the gap between them with a kiss that spoke volumes, a silent affirmation of their budding connection amidst the chaos of the festival.

The kiss, tender and tentative, was a promise of possibility, a perfect memory forged in the heart of Birmingham’s musical embrace.

Josh and Nicole Interrupt

After their kiss, a silence hung between them, electric and charged with the energy of the moment. Eric, feeling a mix of elation and nervousness, looked into Kaitlyn’s eyes, a playful smirk forming on his lips. “If I were nervous, would I have done that?” he said, his voice a blend of feigned confidence and genuine vulnerability.

Kaitlyn’s laugh, light and genuine, filled the space between them. It was then that Josh and Nicole, seemingly appearing out of nowhere, stumbled upon the scene.

“Aw, look at you two,” Nicole cooed, her eyes bright with excitement. “You’re just too cute together! Aren’t you just dying to see John Mayer next?”

Eric, still caught in the afterglow of the kiss, couldn’t help but reply with a touch of sarcasm, “No, no we are not.”

The Night Ends

As Remy Zero’s set came to a close, Kaitlyn glanced at her watch, a small frown forming as she realized the time. “Oh, I really have to go,” she said, her disappointment clear. “But don’t worry, after graduation in a few weeks, my parents said no more curfew.”

As they began to navigate through the crowd, Kaitlyn’s curiosity about Nicole surfaced. “So, what do you think about Nicole?” she asked, her tone casual yet probing.

Eric hesitated before replying, “Well, it’s not just me. Everyone, even Josh, finds her a bit… annoying.”

Kaitlyn nodded, a knowing smile on her lips. “Yeah, I get that. I don’t know why, but she’s just so annoying.”

Their shared laughter carried them away from the festival, leaving behind a perfect memory of the night.
